High Visibility Jackets / Vests
ICU-UCMe findings.
The Problem.
To make drivers and passengers more visible to other drivers when they had vacated their vehicle unexpectedly.
Making the solution easily available, stored within the passenger compartment of the vehicle, ready to wear.
What was available?
High Viz jackets were available for workmen on the roads, building sites and other hazardous areas described as risk areas by the Heath and Safety executive.
These jackets came in various styles and standards, in the vast majority of cases not suitable for the needs required.
The requirement was to find materials of a high specification that could provide the highest luminance in daylight and the best reflective qualities at night and/or poor visibility.
The American Automobile Association Studied 400 Interstate pedestrian fatalities.
This revealed that 1/3 of these fatalities were drivers or passengers who had left their vehicles in unexpected incidents. Break downs, punctured tyres, giving assistance to other road users. They had become "unintended pedestrians". Another observation was that 3/4 of the fatalities occurred after dark. In many cases, drivers told police that they did not see the pedestrian until it was too late to react.
