Research shows that children who attend school regularly are likely to be more successful.

Rising truancy rates leading to poor school attendance continues to hinder many children's development. The annual school performance data shows that the average rate of unauthorised absences for schools in England has risen from 1% to 1.1%.

As a parent or carer, you are responsible for making sure your child goes to school regularly, and on time. Make sure the school knows that you want to be told as soon as any problems arise which involve your child.

The UK government is also keen to tackle the issue of truancy, since 1997 £885M has been spent on measures to tackle the issue however the improvements have been limited with the rate still steady.

A recent report by the BBC stated that police officers are now being equipped with mobile cameras as they patrol the streets where the video footage is digitally stored. This is primarily used as a deterrent as the public are aware of the mobile surveillance in operation.
