Sovereign’s GM is Guest Speaker at the London International Maritime Human Rights 2016 Conference

Sovereign Ferries General Manager, Captain John Dalby, was invited as Guest Speaker at the recent International Maritime Human Rights 2016 Conference in London, having been a dedicated supporter of the Human Rights at Sea charity from its inception in 2015.

His presentation on the topic of “The Challenge of Migration: Stakeholder Response Strategies” dealt with the interaction and co-ordination of maritime assets and resources (including airborne platforms) in dealing with the current Mediterranean Migrant crisis.

John’s extensive seafaring and maritime experience spans more than 50 years. He has been a consultant to Lloyd’s of London, the Institute of London Underwriters and to US underwriters with regard to bulk cargoes (liquid and dry) and to vessels. He was a UK government-approved MARPOL surveyor and a recognised expert in shipping operations, risk management and loss control and fraud prevention in relation to oil and chemical, bulk grain and fertiliser cargoes.

Over the last 20 years, John has spoken at numerous conferences in New York, London, Paris and Monte Carlo and he is an acknowledged expert in his field.

John is the General Manager of Sovereign Ferries Ltd – a subsidiary of The Westminster Group PLC – and is stationed in Sierra Leone tasked with structuring, developing and co-ordinating Sovereign’s presence there. In that capacity he deals regularly with Government Ministers and Authorities in order to enhance the Country’s maritime transport strategy and capability by the use of Sovereign’s waterborne assets.

Sierra Princess Inaugural Voyage

Westminster is pleased to announce Sovereign Ferries’ recently arrived fast ferry, the Sierra Princess, has successfully completed her inaugural voyage.

The Sierra Princess undertook her inaugural voyage at an event held on 9th September 2016 at the Company’s Kissy Terminal in Sierra Leone attended by the Sierra Leone Minister of Transport & Aviation, various other senior government figures, the Chairman, Director General and other dignitaries from the Sierra Leone Ports Authority, the Maritime Police and other institutions. The event was a great success with press and local TV crews in attendance.

The Sierra Princess is a fast ferry capable of transporting up to 70 passengers in safety and air conditioned comfort at over 20 knots from twin 400hp inboard engines. She is equipped with the latest navigational and safety equipment.

The Sierra Princess will be joining Sovereign’s flag ship vessel, the Sierra Queen, in providing a fast, safe and efficient ferry service between the Tagrin, Kissy and Government Wharf terminals either side of the Sierra Leone River Estuary. The service will not only provide a much needed professional airport transfer service between the airport and the Capital Freetown, with crossing times of just 20 minutes but will also provide an efficient ferry service around the capital and further afield.

Services are expected to commence in Q4 2016, full details of commencement dates will be provided in due course on the Sovereign Ferries website www.sovereign-ferries.com where tickets for the service will be available for purchase.

Westminster Group Plc announces that its Technology Division subsidiary Westminster International Ltd has secured a new contract for the supply of a significant quantity of Walk-By Wall Mounted Metal & Cell Phone Detectors to a company based in Malaysia.

The unit is designed for the detection of contraband items such as cell phones turned on or off, weapons and metallic items located on a person or within body cavities or hidden in bags or briefcases etc.

It can be used covertly to screen individuals without their knowledge such as from behind walls.

Westminster staff awarded Ebola medals

Westminster’s expat team who bravely and tirelessly maintained operations at Freetown International Airport during the Ebola crisis in West Africa have been awarded the UK Ebola Medal for Service in West Africa, known simply as the Ebola Medal.

The Ebola Medal is a service medal issued to the Armed Forces, and to civilians working either for Her Majesty’s Government or NGOs in support of the British Government’s response to the Ebola crisis that began in 2014. The qualifying period of service for award of the medal is from 23 March 2014 until 29 March 2016.

Commenting on the Medal award to Westminster’s staff Peter Fowler, Chief Executive of Westminster Group, said:

“I am delighted that the hard work, bravery and dedication of our ex-pat team, who worked beyond the call of duty to maintain operations and helped keep Freetown International Airport safe and open during the Ebola crisis in West Africa, has been recognised by the award of these medals.

“I am extremely proud of all our staff, both expat and local, who not only maintained full operations at the airport but also provided considerable assistance to the local community and visiting NGO’s fighting the crisis. It is a testament to the skill and bravery of our management team and staff that not only did we manage to maintain full employment of all our local staff, despite the fact that most airlines ceased to operate to the country, but also that we managed to keep all our staff safe and well throughout the crisis.

“The award of these medals to our staff is a well-deserved and fitting tribute to them all.”

Product News – WG Truck and Cargo X-Ray Scanning Portal

Westminster Group Plc, Technology Division subsidiary Westminster International Ltd announces the launch of the WG Truck and Cargo X-Ray Scanning Portal which is a relocatable drive through state-of-the-art dual-energy X-ray scanner for the detection of contraband items explosives, narcotics and weapons etc and the checking of cargo compliance to manifest documentation.

The portal utilises two X-Ray systems, a 200 kV source is utilised for screening box trucks and larger vans and the cab area of larger trucks towing sea freight containers; a 7.5 MeV source is utilised for screening sea freight containers.

Trucks drive through the scanner under their own power allowing a high throughput of vehicles.
